A Tiny Lighter Conquers the Vast Market — A Snapshot of Cengong County’s Accelerated Drive to Promote New‑Type Industrialization
Guizhou JiaCheng Automation Technology Co., Ltd., located in the Shawen Ecological Industrial Park, Shawen Town, Guiyang High-tech Zone, Guiyang City, Guizhou Province, is an enterprise that integrates research and development, manufacturing, and sales of lighter‑making equipment. At the company, technicians are busy commissioning a newly developed fully automatic feeding machine equipped with a dual‑welding system.
“This equipment currently undergoing commissioning is an upgraded dual‑welding machine. Previously, it could only perform automatic disc insertion, automatic welding of the head, and bottom‑valve welding—three separate steps. Now we’ve integrated these three processes, running them in parallel. Compared with the previous setup, disc‑insertion capacity has increased by more than fivefold, and welding throughput has risen by over threefold,” explained He Kehong, head of Guizhou Jia Cheng Automation Technology Co., Ltd. He added that through technological upgrades and efficiency improvements, the company has helped lighter manufacturers reduce costs and boost productivity. At present, the fully automated disc‑insertion and welding machines developed and produced by the company not only meet the equipment needs of four lighter‑manufacturing enterprises in the development zone but are also sold to provinces and regions including Hunan, Guangdong, Jiangxi, and Guangxi.
Deepening integration across the industrial chain, with simultaneous improvements in quality and efficiency. At present, the Cengong Economic Development Zone has attracted 16 enterprises engaged in lighter manufacturing and related supporting industries, including six foreign‑trade‑oriented lighter producers. The zone now boasts an annual output of approximately one billion lighters, generating over US$20 million in export revenue. Its products are exported to Russia, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America, while creating more than 2,400 jobs.
Zhou Kaixia, 32, is a relocated resident of Daping Community. To care for her three young children, she came to work at a lighter‑manufacturing company in Guizhou a year ago, successfully balancing childcare with earning an income. “It’s very convenient to work here—there’s a two‑day weekend and flexible hours. I can look after my kids while still making one to two thousand yuan a month to help support the family,” Zhou said, deftly assembling lighters as she chatted happily with the reporter about the joys of working right near her home.
Through public–government–enterprise collaboration, government–university partnerships, and “university–local” cooperation, Cengong County has established an investment‑financing platform for the lighter industry, an intelligent transformation platform, a commodity inspection platform, and a lighter‑type testing laboratory. Since 2016, enterprises have cumulatively invested RMB 9.39 million in product research and development. Lighter‑equipment manufacturers within the development zone have developed a finished‑lighter insertion machine capable of producing 120 units per minute, a lighter‑body insertion machine with a throughput of 250 units per minute, and a fully automated welding machine that can perform twenty welds simultaneously.
Currently, the Cengong lighter industry has achieved self-sufficiency in core components, boasts eight independent foreign‑trade brands, holds 34 patents for its export products, owns eight trademarks for those products, and operates 16 overseas direct‑marketing networks, further strengthening the sector’s international competitiveness. The humble lighter has become a key driver of county‑level economic growth and a reliable source of sustained income for local residents.
